Val Smith 26/5/08

By John Heikell

World Champion Val Smith enchanted Gisborne East Coast's bowling fraternity with her bubbly and friendly disposition on her visit to the district last weekend. She had a hectic weekend but was keen to assist, meet with aspiring bowlers and was ready to pass on hints to help their game. However, the centre and particularly Radio Live Poverty Bay BC made it a great venture for Smith.

The diminutive Smith was overwhelmed with the fantastic welcome she said. "That is the first Maori (powhiri) welcome I have ever received and it was wonderful although I was a little nervy and emotional. "It was also a great gesture of inviting me to the district, the first invitational I have received since the World Championships," said Smith. Smith bagged the singles and pairs gold medal at the recent World Championships in Christchurch although she felt the pressure. "There was enormous pressure on the Black Jacks because we were playing in New Zealand. "You had to perform in front your own people, friends, family and the bowling fraternity. "Many of the people watching had played alongside or against our players at Nationals, club or centre tournaments and that added to the pressure, she said. However, the team did the job and apart from Smith's amazing feats the women's team also picked up one bronze. The men did the same and their effort gained them the Leonard Cup as the best team.

Smith is a performance based player so is not big into winning or losing but she believed she would have a good chance of winning a title if she could perform to her ability. "It was important to take the mental pressure out of the equation in the Worlds and instead make it a challenging and exciting time.

"There is always that element of fear in the top game but in the end it turned out well for us," she said. Smith approached the two World Championships finals as just another game and after working through the early game she was confident she could pull it off. "I told myself not to be hard on myself so I went into the final reasonably relaxed.  "Normally I am a nervy person but I was very comfortable, happy and yet with some emotional moments knowing how my support group was feeling.  "The instant you win the game it is an unbelievable feeling and hard to describe. When you have the gold medal around your neck and the National Anthem playing it is a most wonderful experience," Smith described.

Winning the singles was a milestone however, winning the pairs with her friend Jo Edwards of 26 years was an incredible emotional moment she said.

"We had played a variety of sports together over the years but to be playing together for New Zealand and at the World Championships and to go on to win the gold was unbelievable. "When the Worlds Bowl Team was announced we were selected for the pairs and at our first training camp and in private I said to Jo - I want to win this one," the determined Smith said.  Despite being ranked as the World women's No 1 singles player with two gold medals at the World Championships Smith does not feel anything different she said. "The ranking does not mean anything to me. Twelve month ago I would not have been in the rankings but suddenly I am No 1. "It is just something on paper.   "The euphoria of winning something major like that does not last that long. "After the success you have to go back to work, earn some money and life is just the same," she said.

Smith started bowling in 1992 and saw the game as a challenge. "Playing a lot of other sports and also being a sports watcher I had an idea of the game by watching others and people pointing me in the right direction and the rest I worked out for myself
.   It did not take long for Smith to be noticed and seven years into the game was picked for the NZ Academy side for the series against Australia. Her first full New Zealand selection was in 2003 and she made her debut in the Transtasman series. "Those were like war," she said. "You can feel the tension and although we have a lot of respect of each other it is like a battlefield on the greens. "I do not feel the same atmosphere in any of the other international tournaments. "Australia is a team you love to beat. But if it was not for the Australia, New Zealand matches we would not be as good as we are.  "The two countries are very competitive but in a different way. We are a more conservative, quieter and yet determined side compared to the boisterous, loud in the face Australianbut it is a marvellous atmosphere," Smith explained. Smith believes she has build up to the top echelon over the 20 months.

Smith would like to play for Black Jacks for as long as she can although she feels it will be the start of a new chapter. 'I do not know what the international programme is this year but hopefully with guidance from Bowls NZ I will be able to set new goals.  "That is going to be hardest - resetting goals, perhaps a change of course and to maintain the form and the mental side of the game that I had in the World Championships. Despite all the pressure and intensity of the international games the effervescent Smith still loves the game.  "It is difficult to explain but any sportsperson with a competitive streak would understand what it would like to be out there representing your country and in the top level. "It gets in your blood. I have been in the game for some time now and the enjoyment is still there."

Smith has always been a sporty person and was involved in a number of codes and performed admirably in most of them. She was a top soccer player and was selected for the New Zealand U21 side, made the New Zealand squad and played for NZ B side, represented Nelson in cricket and hockey and the same codes in the indoor version while she dabbled with rugby and rugby league. "I learned a lot from playing soccer and cricket and it instilled the mental side of sport in me," Smith said. Bowls has not been lucrative for Smith although Bowls NZ look after the players well there is no financial gain.

Along with partner Charlie Edgarton she runs a lawn mowing business, aptly the Lawn Bowler, but commitments to New Zealand and involvement in major tournaments is a strain on the business. The 42 year-old is an outstanding player is highly rated within and outside of bowls and with a wonderful temperament she should be to the forefront of the game for many years.
