WOMEN BOWLERS KEEP HAWKES BAY COMPETITIVE

The Region 3 finals of the annual New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) & Dorchester events was held in Palmerston North during the past week with Hawkes Bay Centre winners competing against opponents from Manawatu, Wairarapa & Gisborne/East Coast.   The region winners to compete in the NZ finals in April.

The Womens NZCT PAIRS resulted in an easy win in the final to our Hawkes Bay Women of COLLEEN FERRICK (s) & PAM ROWLANDS (l) (Heretaunga) over their opponents from Terrace End (Manawatu).      Well done to both Colleen & Pam who have featured in other Region final wins over the last week.

The Womens NZCT SINGLES saw COLLEEN FERRICK play through to the final where unfortunately she lost to SARAH BROWN from Te Karaka (Manawatu).     Well done again Colleen.

The Mixed Dorchester 2x4x2 saw our representatives GEORGE NGAMATUA & SALLY SUTCLIFFE reach the final where they lost to the father & daughter combination of DISIREE & PETER LAMBERT, Northern BC (Manawatu).     A great effort in a very strong field from George & Sally.

The Womens NZCT FOURS saw our Hawkes Bay representatives from Bowls Heretaunga (Susan Belcher, Joyce Harding, Lynn Stowe, Colleen Ferrick) after 'fighting back' from a large deficit to take the lead, unfortunately miss out on the title on the last end.    The winners were a Northern (Manawatu) team skipped by Viv Lozell.

The Womens NZCT TRIPLES was won by a Riverside (Gisborne/East Coast) team skipped by Pat Wareham.     Our Hawkes Bay team from Bowls Heretaunga was Elaine Lange, Jane Patterson, Margaret Wakefield.

The Bowls Hawkes Bay MEN were unsuccessful in all events, again highlighting the success of the provinces WOMEN bowlers.

The Mens NZCT PAIRS resulted in an easy win to Ray Lovie & Neil Gordon, Northern (Manawatu) over their Martinborough (Wairarapa) opponents.    The Hawkes Bay team was Graeme Fulford & Dave Haggerty (Havelock North).

The Mens NZCT SINGLES was won by Les Donovan, Featherston (Wairarapa) over Robin Jefferson, Gisborne (Gisborne/East Coast).   The Hawkes Bay representative was Paul Sorensen (Napier).

The Mens NZCT FOURS was won by Pat Horgan, Steve Toms, Ross Ellery, Bob Williams (Manawatu).    The Hawkes Bay team was Graeme Wagg, Ken Smith, Pat O'Neil, Dave Stevenson (Napier).

The Mens NZCT TRIPLES won by David File, Boon McIlroy, Lester Wright, Te Karaka (Gisborne/East Coast).     The Hawkes Bay representatives were Mark Stevenson, Bob Strahl, Jim Hagen (Napier).

WELL DONE HAWKES BAY WOMEN
-- AGAIN  !

The Region 3 Inter Centre Representative tournament was held at the Northern Bowling Club Palmerston North on Sunday 2 March 08.      Manawatu, Gisborne/East Coast, Wairarapa & Hawkes Bay competed.   Men & Women Senior & Development teams of 6 players played a round robin series of Singles, Pairs & Triples.

HAWKES BAY DEVELOPMENT WOMEN with eight wins from their nine games successfully defended their 2007 title & will represent the Region in the National finals in April.

The team, selected & managed by Peg O'Dowd is:
Singles:  Mere Nepia (Bay View)
Pairs:  Raelene Cronin (s) (Bowls Napier) & Lois Stewart (l) (Havelock North)
Triples:  Liffy Law (s) (Havelock North), Noa Pou (2) (Bowls Napier) & Pam Rowlands (l) (Bowls Heretaunga).

Five of the team (Mere is the addition) also reached the NZ finals last season.     The players all agree, a regular practice programme, supervised by coaches Sandy Hampton & Doug White & the way all members support each other & get on together as a group is a major part of their success.

HAWKES BAY DEVELOPMENT MEN - Almost  !

For the second consecutive year the Development Men were in contention to win their division.     Results of the last round unfortunately did not all go their way & another runner-up position resulted.      Bowls Manawatu won the Development Men for the second year.

HAWKES BAY SENIOR MEN & WOMEN

Both teams had an very average & disappointing tournament.   Consistency in their standard of play not high enough to result in a challenge for their respective titles.   Gisborne/East Coast won both the Senior Men & Senior Women titles.

3 March 2008
